In the first days, less is urgent than it seems. This list helps you do what matters first — and the rest in peace. You can tick it off here and save it as a PDF, with no sign-up at all.

Request several original death certificates from the registry office (you will need more than one).
Submit any existing will to the probate court (this is mandatory).
Review ongoing contracts — but do not cancel anything in haste.
Note the deadlines: inheritance tax must be reported within three months.
Keep the six-week disclaiming deadline in view: an over-indebted inheritance can only be disclaimed within six weeks of becoming aware (Section 1944 BGB) — when that makes sense.
Who belongs to the community of heirs, what belongs to the estate — get an overview.
Have the value assessed neutrally — a factual basis before talking about keeping or selling.
Before any decisions about the house: first the overview, then the conversation.
